A nicely engineered Victorian-era surveyor’s transit (level theodolite) by renowned maker, Troughton Simms of London. Brass with black-stained finish. Nice example of a historical artifact.

Troughton & Simms was founded in 1826 as a British instrument-maker. The firm produced astronomical instruments such as mural circles, transit circles, sextants, and other astronomical instruments for observatories around the world. In 1922, it merged with T. Cooke & Sons to form Cooke, Troughton & Simms.
